Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the APPNA Medical Corps Mission to Muzaffarabad!

APPNA Medical Corps is privileged to partner with Midland Doctors Medical Institute (MDMI https://midlanddoctors.org/) to provide subspecialist and surgical care for the impoverished in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan.

Specialties needed: General Surgery, Anesthesiology, Urology, cardiology (general and interventionalists), ophthalmology, Pediatrics (General), Malnutrition, Dental, Gynecology, Neurologist (specialists in Spinal Cord Injury), General Practitioners (Internal and Family Medicine), Psychiatry

Pre-Med/Medical Students, Residents and PA/NP are also considered for the missions. Depending on availability of space, physicians can bring their high school or undergrad college children on the trip. Childcare is not provided, and it is the responsibility of the parent to care for their children.

How do I sign up?

The first step to help with future missions is to complete the Online Volunteer Form. Once you complete the Online Volunteer Form, you will receive an email requesting more information about you in the form of your CV/ resume and a short statement describing your interest in the mission. You will also need to complete the APPNA Liability Release Form and proof of COVID19 Vaccination.

To confirm your commitment to the Mission, proof of air fare purchase to Pakistan is required 4 weeks prior to the mission start date. It is your responsibility as a volunteer to pay for air fare, lodging, and food expenses for the mission. The medical mission committee may also require a fee for local transportation.

Once the required information is received by Minal Ahson, MD MSPH (minal.ahson@gmail.com), Mission Lead, the main contact in preparing you for the mission. She will provide details including hotel information, travel, estimated cost of the mission, and essentials to pack.

The Hospital:

  1. Clinics run from 9A to 2 P
  2. Operating Capacity: 2 Operating Rooms and 1 interventional suite (for urology, cardiology)
  3. Neuro Rehab unit – 4 bed unit (2 for patients, 2 for carers)
    1. To treat paralyzed patients who are currently being cared for at home

The tentative mission itinerary is as follows:
Saturday: Volunteers arrive in Islamabad. Accommodation arrangements to be made by the volunteer.
Sunday: Volunteers convene in the morning and take a chartered van to Muzaffarabad. Travel is approximately 4 hours.
Monday: Clinic/PreOp/Surgical Day at the Hospital
Tuesday: Clinic/PreOp/Surgical Day at the Hospital
Wednesday: Clinic/PreOp/Surgical Day at the Hospital
Thursday: Clinic/PreOp/Surgical Day at the Hospital
Friday: Clinic/PreOp/Surgical Day at the Hospital.
Saturday: Volunteers convene in the morning and take a chartered van to Islamabad.  Return flights can be scheduled for this evening.

There will be 1-2 dinners arranged in the evenings for the group.

Volunteers can extend their trip to travel the Neelum Valley once clinic days have ended. Arrangements can be facilitated through MDMI via a tour company.
