The 40th Annual APPNA Winter meeting was held in collaboration with KEMU and the Lahore Children’s Hospital. This was the first of its kind, VIRTUAL MEETING, done in lieu of the usual live On-site meeting. It was a pleasant surprise that the meeting turned out to be much more successful than expected. In some ways, it was perceived by the participants as better than the live meetings.

The meeting was a purely educational event which offered 9 hours of Category I AMA CME credits. It was recorded and will be available on FB, YouTube and APPNA MERIT Webpage for 90 days ending March 26, 2021.

The theme of the meeting was understanding and knowing the INSIGHTS INTO THE RAMPPANT COVID -19 PANDEMIC. The topics covered its varied presentation, complications, management, info about the new Vaccines, their safety, public health issues and the importance of ongoing much needed COMMUNITY EDUCATION about the disease and preventive measures. Moreover, the audience also learned about the first POSTMORTEM study findings from University of Chicago.

The program included a session focused on making PRIMARY CARE as a recognized discipline of initial access to medical care in Pakistan to help avoid burden the subspecialists with common illnesses that can easily be handled by Family Physicians. The presentations elaborated on “ACUTE CARE CLINICAL SCENARIOS IN PRIMARY CARE”.

APPNA held its first Pediatric Scientific Symposium with The Lahore Children’s Hospital Dec.23rd under the Leadership of Dr. Ayesha Najib, President APPNA Pediatrics, covering Corona Virus Vaccine update, COVID-19 affecting children and other topics.

We heard about the response of Government of Pakistan and readiness for the 2nd WAVE OF COVID-19 from Dr. Faisal Sultan, Special Assistant to the PM of Pakistan.

The Federal Minister for Higher Education, Mr. Shafqat Mahmood, updated about the Government of Pakistan’s plans for positive steps being taken to improve the educational system all across the board in the country.

All the speakers were top notch experts in their fields with some Internationally recognized names:

· Prof. Aliya Husain, Dept. of Pathology Univ of Chicago

· Prof. Saad Omer, Director Yale Institute of global Health

· Dr. Umair A. Shah, Secretary Health Washington State, Seattle

· Prof. Mobeen Rathore, Chief Infectious Diseases Univ. of Florida

· Dr. Faisal Masud, Medical Director Center for Critical Care Houston Methodist Hospital system

APPNA is extremely grateful to all the participating faculty who brought their expertise and made a very positive impact on the audience. Dr. Aliya Husain from Univ. of Chicago was very impressed and called it a “World Class meeting”.

The success of this landmark educational program would not have been possible without the support of the local hosts. We are especially thankful to Prof. Gondal, VC KEMU and Prof. Masood Sadiq, Dean Lahore Children’s Hospital for the patronization and enthusiastic participation of their faculty members.

APPNA MERIT led by Dr. Danish Bhatti and Dr. Shahid Rafiq along with their logistic tech support provided by Waleed Choudhary, deserve special mention as the meeting events were conducted flawlessly. This CME activity was chaired by Dr. Ayesha Najib.

APPNA members are encouraged to enroll in the registration of this one-of-a-kind memorable CME program to earn credits on-line available for another 3 months or so. We look forward to your comments for ongoing improvement.
