Sunday September 30: Lima – Cusco (Activity Level 2; High altitude)

Cusco – The “Navel of the Earth” is another name for Cusco, since during the height of the Inca civilization nearly all pathways led to this capital of the empire. Today, almost every visitor to Peru eventually comes to this city located 11,150 feet above sea level (3,400 meters) and one of the best places to experience the remainders of different ages. You will not only find Incan walls and temples, but also colonial mansions and catholic churches. In combination with the flair of modern Cusco, it is one of the most fascinating cities in the country.

Today, you will go on a city tour of Cusco which consists of a visit to its most important landmarks of both the Inca and the Colonial times. During your tour you will visit Koricancha, also known as the temple of the sun. A catholic monastery, Santo Domingo, was built on the site, partly including the Incan Walls of the Sun Temple. Continue to the Cathedral, considered the best repository of colonial art from the Cusco school. It was built over the palace of the Inca Wiracocha and considered the religious and political center of Cusco during the Inca era. You will also walk through the Inca Street of Loreto, a fine sample of the old town and its remarkable Inca walls.

Afterwards, you will leave the city to visit the outer parts of Cusco were you can find important ruins of the Inca Empire. Between them the most important is the archaeological park of the fortress-temple Saqsaywaman which shows precise zigzags of massive stone to which centuries could not do any harm.

You participate in a traditional “Pasacalle” accompanied by musicians making your way to a unique picnic setting in the mystical surroundings of Sachsayhuaman to enjoy a deluxe picnic lunch.

Here, you will take part in a mystical Andean ritual, the shaman ceremony “pago a la tierra”. For centuries, the ancient Peruvians who inhabited the upper Andean areas of the country venerated to Pachamama or Mother Earth as a sacred goddess and giver of life. In thanksgiving for the abundance of food, they held mystical ceremonies in which they made offering of native foods and animals, while invoking the Apu (Spirit of the mountain) and the Wilko (God of the fire). Despite this being an ancient ritual, it is still part of current Peruvian culture.
